Disney Tag

I've been to three Disneylands (California, Florida and Hong Kong) so I think it will be fun to do this Disney Tag!

California Adventure - Source: www.chipandco.com
1. A scene in any Disney movie you wish you could experience?
I think I would want to experience the scene in Enchanted where Giselle falls through the hole and transitions from the cartoon world to the real one. Changing from 2D to 3D must feel pretty cool and all the confusion of entering a completely different world should be nervewracking but adventurous!

2. An unforgettable experience or moment you've had at the parks?
My most vivid memory at Disney's California Adventure was riding the big roller coaster. It was my first time on a roller coaster that looped upside down and I still remember how exciting and exhilarating it felt.

3. What non-Disney song(s) reminds you or brings back memories of Disney?
Britney Spear's Oops I Did It Again because that was the song we sang during the roadtrip to Disney. It was probably also the first Britney song I learned back when she was the pop princess.

4. When was the first time you went to a Disney Park?
My first time was when I was 8 years old and we went to California's Disneyland. It was spring break and I got to enjoy the park with new friends I made on the roadtrip. Everything made me go "wow."

5. If you could choose any of the characters to be your best friend, who would you choose?
Technically this isn't a Disney character but Disney produced the English version of the movie so I would choose Totoro because I can't choose any other character! I'd also love to know the entire crew of Toy Story too because I grew up with those movies.

6. Who are your favourite Disney princesses?
When I was younger I really liked Cinderella because of her dress.

7. Name a scene or moment in any Disney movie that never fails to make you cry?
I wouldn't say that it makes me cry but the scene where Simba's dad dies in Lion King is pretty sad.

8. What is the first Disney movie you remember seeing?
I had a Mickey Mouse version of Jack and the Beanstalk on videotape and I would watch it over and over. I still remember that the videotape was purple instead of the usual black.

9. What is your favourite Disney movie?
This is hard to choose but probably Toy Story.

Those are all the questions for today and hopefully I can keep up with weekly blogging.

Take care,

Childhood Friendships

Last week, family friends from Oregon came to visit. I've known the older sister since we were both babies and I watched their mom pregnant with the younger sister all the way through her birth and growth. In other words, I've known them for a long time. Although we live in different places, our families have been able to keep in touch all these years which I hope to do with the new friends I meet all over the world.

Caramel macaron, hazelnut macaron, lemon tart
It is weird growing up with friends from the early years of childhood. When you're young, you become best friends with someone almost instantly and you can be entertained for hours with imaginary games or secret handshakes.

Yet as you grow older, if you don't get to spend much time together, that instant bond as a child will start to take longer and longer. You do not pick up instantly from where you left off the last time you saw each other because you are leading different lives and have different interests. I find myself having to use more effort to think of common topics that we can all talk about because I realize that I don't actually know that much about them despite the years of friendship. This isn't just with my Oregon friends but with other childhood friends as well.

Anywho, as I grow older I appreciate each friendship more and so I want to give in more effort to keep in touch because you never know when you will see them again. As grim as it sounds, my parents have childhood friends who have passed away well before they reached old age. Life is unexpected, so make the most of it.

Toronto & Waterloo: 6 Days

It has been exactly one month since I've blogged here! I guess I just needed a small break after blogging for 60 days straight but I'm back now and aiming to post regularly.

About a week after I returned from Taiwan, I went to Toronto July 19th to 24th for a conference. I took a red eye flight which was a bad idea since I am the type of person who can't fall asleep on planes (not even long haul flights), so I was extremely tired when I arrived in Toronto.

Beautiful view from flight. Photo credit: Best U.

Let's Go!

Fortunately the transport system from Toronto Pearson International Airport to downtown was inexpensive and convenient. It only cost CAD$3 to take a bus then the subway to the city.

Right after we dropped off our luggage, I took a much needed hour nap and then I was energized to explore the city before the conference began in the evening! We went to eat brunch at Over Easy which was delicious then to St. Lawrence Market where I wished I didn't have such a large breakfast at Over Easy so that I could eat more at the market. The weather was absolutely gorgeous as you can see in my unedited photo below.

St. Lawrence Market
I really enjoyed how there is a mix of well preserved old buildings in between modern buildings all around Toronto. We stopped for gelato at The Distillery and walked through small boutiques in the area.

The Distillery
I think I enjoyed the walk along Lake Shore Blvd most because I love the water and it was breezier there on the hot summer day. It is also a great place to see the famous CN Tower, although with its height you can pretty much see it from anywhere in the city.

Lake Shore Blvd
The Union Station was quite pretty but there was a large portion boarded up for renovation. That is the trouble with travelling in the summer: construction! When I was in Quebec last year, half the parliament building was undergoing renovations which certainly didn't make for nice photos.

Union Station

Day 1 to 3

Friday evening to Sunday evening was spent at the conference where I met many new people, especially the ones I will be working virtually with over the next half a year! I love Canada but sometimes I do think that our country is too wide. My teammates are from all over the country and I don't know when will be the next time I get to see them in person due to distance.

Cool teammates :)

Day 4

After the conference ended I decided to stay behind for three more days. Monday afternoon I took the Greyhound to Waterloo to visit high school friends. I don't remember when was the last time I took a Greyhound but I'm glad to say that my ride went smoothly.

There wasn't much to do around the city so they just took me to the downtown area to eat then walk around the city hall and to the University of Waterloo. I visited more than a handful of university campuses this summer and it really changed what I used to imagine universities to be like.

Day 5

In the morning I took the Greyhound back to Toronto for another day of city touring. We went to Centre Island which required a short ferry ride to get to. As a tourist, the ferry ride is worth taking because it offers a great view of the city.

Centre Island Ferry
There were lots of activities suitable for younger children on the island including small amusement park rides, large park areas, paddle boats, beaches and a petting zoo. I heard there's also a nude beach which isn't necessarily child friendly.

This pig at the zoo area is definitely the largest pig I've ever seen. It is probably the size of a small pony!

Pig at Centre Island
Back in the city we lined up for 15 minutes at the Magnum pop up shop for the famous luxury ice cream bars. I'm glad that I came to Toronto when they had the store open because it was really delicious! Of course, I got the macaron topping because I love macarons.

Magnum
After this photo a small story happened to my ice cream bar (my bar is the one on the bottom). The ice cream bar is dipped in chocolate so naturally the chocolate would stick to the cardboard box holding the bar. My macaron piece was sitting delicately on top of my bar and I used a little too much force to peal the bar off the box to eat, resulting in my macaron piece catapulting across the table onto the floor before I even had a bite! That was a little sad but oh well, the rest of the bar still tasted good :)

Magnum bars
In the evening, we went to Korea Town on Bloor Street for dinner then to a cafe called Snakes and Lattes to play board games. For $5 we could play the shelves and shelves of board games all night, pretty good deal.

Day 6

My last day in Toronto, I visited the downtown University of Toronto campus. It is so integrated into downtown that sometimes it is confusing which part is downtown and which part is the university. Regardless, it is a beautiful campus.

U of T
U of T Library
By early evening I was back at the airport for my flight home. This trip was short but sweet. In years to come I may not remember the names of the landmarks I went to but I certainly will remember how I felt while here: happy :)

Isdaan Floating Restaurant of Calauan, Laguna

A place that took the definition of restaurant to a whole new level. A floating restaurant that take customers into a different world. That's how I define Isdaan Floating Restaurant of Calauan, Laguna. Though Isdaan Floating Restaurant is a Thailand inspired place, with all those larger than life statues of Buddhas, little monks and mermaids, they still managed to incorporate a touch of Filipino culture through their food. Yup, they serve appetizing Filipino food here. By the way, another site of Isdaan is located in the northern part of Luzon - Gerona, Tarlac. They have the same vibe so it will be just a matter of how close you are on these two sites in terms of deciding on which branch you're going to pick and visit.

How to get there?
Take a bus located at Buendia LRT Station with a signage of "Sta. Cruz", Laguna. It is approximately 2-hour drive away from Manila.Going to Isdaan is easy. The place is just along the highway and it's hard to miss because of the towering statues of Mermaid Buddhas located in the entrance/parking area of Isdaan Floating Restaurant.. But just to be sure, inform the bus conductor to drop you at Isdaan. Fare is 85 pesos.

Entrance to Isdaan Floating Restaurant
Yup, this is their parking area
Isdaan is owned and operated by the Barrio Fiesta group of restaurants. Therefore, never doubt the taste of the food being served here. And so I decided that this blog entry will be more on the side of travelling rather than a food blog...

As we reach Isdaan Floating Restaurant, my initial reaction was astounded. I can't help myself as my eyes went wide because of amusement on the beauty of this restaurant. I have already saw this place in the internet and photos but still, I was blown away of its architectural design as well as how artistic this place was built and constructed. Kudos to the owner!

We're still in the Philippines :]
Actually, me and my girlfriend felt like we were foreign tourists in land of Thailand during our stay in Isdaan. Mermaid Buddhas were everywhere in Isdaan and they're more than life-sized statues. In addition to this are the bamboo pathways and cottages which adds flavor and makes Isdaan more to be like ancient Thailand.

This place is remarkable
Happy couple! Cheers!
We were then directed to our cottage. We've given a small but cute nipa hut that can accommodate up to 4 persons but since we were only 2 on this trip it was more than enough for us. Then the waiter hand over us their menu... a long list of menu. It was as long as 3 sheets of long bond paper and it is written back to back containing their list of foods. We had a hard time picking what food to eat because there were a bunch to choose from. I also noticed that their target clients are family and groupies because their servings come in bundles or in kilos.

Heading to our cottage... It looks like the one in the background
Sinigang na Hipon and Iced tea with Gumamela flower on the side
We ordered 1 kilo of Sinigang na Hipon (Sugpo, actually), 1/2 kilo of Inihaw na Tilapia, 1 kaldero of kanin (good for 2-3 persons), and 1 pitcher of iced tea. Imagine how full we are after we ate all of it. *laugh

They serve the rice here along with the "kaldero"
After that blockbuster lunch, we started to explore the whole vicinity of Isdaan Floating Restaurant. It is pretty big and has a total land area of 56.6 square kilometers. We were blessed because it was a shady afternoon when we visited Isdaan. The weather is just fine for taking photos, not too sunny neither dark.

Very detailed...
One of the highlight of this place is the entrance as you come inside the place. You will be walking in between tall statues. This give visitors a feel like they're not in the Philippines anymore. Under your feet is a pond because you are also walking above a bamboo trail since this is a floating restaurant. The whole place is a large fish pond. One can do fishing in which they can ask the staff of Isdaan to cook their catches.

It is still expanding so we can expect more on this place in the following years
Aside from the very South East Asian vibe of the place, it has an impressive Fiesta atmosphere which is very Filipino in a sense. There are bands that serenade each nipa hut, performers and actors that performs acrobatic stunts and other extra ordinary talents. It is a happy place. Everyone will definitely have a good time when they visit Isdaan Floating Restaurant.

Bring the whole family...
... Also the one you love.
Isdaan didn't forget the interest of the kids. Bikes and trolleys for children are available which can be rented. They also installed statues of cartoon characters, animals and other personalities that will surely loved by kids and kids alike (like me and my girlfriend). These include angry birds, Batman, Pres. Barack and a lot more.

Wazzup Kiddo?!
Slave by your love Baby ko! Lol
Aside from the photo above, simply refer on the photos below to see how playful and crazy we are in this trip. We're like children in this themed park/restaurant.

May this love be blessed...
Evolution of man..

What are you looking at bro?
I'm happy when she's happy (but I envy that lil monk!)
Just having a good time!
Just like the water... I wish time freezes when I'm with her (baduy ko na!)
Cheated by your boyfriend/girlfriend? Have you been a victim of rubbery? Stressed out with your bosses? Discovered a dark secret? Been fooled by a scam? If your answer is yes then there is a place for you in Isdaan that can lessen your anger and stress. There's a famous wall in Isdaan that is called Tacsiyapo. It is an open area and at the end point lies a wall with written words. Words that refer to someone we found annoying in one's life. The key here is to buy a ceramic cup, plates, wall clocks and even a working television at the station then throw or smash them into the wall while targeting the words you are angry with. An ideal place for people who are walking timebombs. Time to release all those pains and anger! Price of items that you can throw into the wall ranges from 20 pesos (cups) up to 2,000 pesos (television).

Target Locked!
I want to throw that television that day. Too bad I don't have enough money!

There are also gigantic Buddhas and a gorilla in this area. This is a place where people will be amazed how great Filipinos are in creating this kind of sculptures. Even I, I couldn't imagine that there is an existing place like this and can be found in Laguna. This is one spot that people should not miss when visiting Laguna. It will not only satisfy your tummy with their food but also your eyes with all those larger than life statues.

I think this is the biggest display in Isdaan...

My ID for the event
Going back in the motor show, this event is titled The World of Toyota because this will highlight Toyota vehicles from the past, present and future. In short, this is like time travelling that will bring viewers back to our old-school-days rides plus a preview of Toyota's upcoming models.

Welcome to the World of Toyota
As I enter on the venue, I was greeted by a melting pot of modified Toyotas and I must say it was a great start to welcome attendees of the event. People, which includes me, can't stop drooling on the displayed vehicles. Attendees start checking out and talking about the car's features. Photographers and enthusiasts also start pressing their shutter buttons to capture those jaw dropping cars. That time, everybody was excited to see what lies behind the other room where the main event will be held.
